Round Rock, Texas formed along the banks of Brushy Creek in 1851, near a large round rock in the center of the creek. This round rock served as an easy crossing point for cattle, horses and wagons, due to the low water found there. The round rock remains in the middle of Brushy Creek near Chisholm Trail Street.

The small town began to experience rapid growth during the 1970’s, when Austin began to overflow with opportunities for large-scale development. From that time on, Round Rock, TX served as a bedroom community for Austin. From the 1980’s through the present, growth continued as several computer-related industries and more than 300 retail establishments created a prosperous economy in Round Rock, Texas.

Round Rock, located in Williamson County, is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. According to the 2000 Census, Round Rock, TX reported a population of 61,136; however, 2005 estimates show an increase to more than 86,000 residents. Round Rock doubled its population since 1990 and is now the largest city in Williamson County, TX and is among the fastest growing cities in the state. Round Rock is the eight safest city in America for a town of its size.

Despite the rapid growth, Round Rock, Texas managed to preserve a high quality of life for residents, while transforming the region into a major center of economic development in central Texas. The business community enjoys a strategic location along the busy Interstate 35 and Round Rock lies just sixteen miles north of downtown Austin. Major employers operating from within Round Rock, TX include Cypress Semiconductor, Dell and Farmers Insurance Group. The median household income in Round Rock is $60,354.

Round Rock Independent School District offers residents award winning public schools for primary and secondary levels of education. There is also a private parochial school in town. Those seeking higher education have access to the Round Rock Higher Education Center, with baccalaureate and other advanced degrees. Round Rock is also within a reasonable driving distance of numerous major colleges and universities in the surrounding areas. These include the prestigious University of Texas at Austin, Concordia University, Huston-Tillotson University and St. Edward’s University. Nearly thirty-three percent of Round Rock’s population over 25 years of age have a bachelor’s degree or higher.

Citizens enjoy nearly 300 days of sunshine each year, affording ample time for access to Round Rock’s 34 developed parks. One such facility, Old Settlers Park, plays host to a wealth of festivals, movies and live music throughout the year. Round Rock, TX, which calls itself the Sports Capital of Texas, is home to Round Rock Express, a Class AAA Pacific Coast League minor league baseball team owned by Nolan Ryan. Additional facilities available to the public include the Allen R. Baca Center and the Clay Madsen Recreation Center.
